Dharma – Ready for Adoption!

You know the story of The Sword in the Stone? How only the rightful king could pull it free? Or maybe you’re familiar with Thor’s hammer, which can only be lifted by those noble enough to be worthy of its power?
I’m Dharma and to be my friend is to be considered The Chosen One.
It’s like being invited to ride on the back of a unicorn. It’s like bending Odysseus’ bow. It’s like winning the lottery and a gold medal all in the same day.
Okay, okay… it’s not THAT rare. But it’s plenty precious and special! Here’s the deal: I don’t always like everyone. When I first came to the shelter, I was scared and angry and needed vet care, which I did not find enjoyable in the least. My caretakers and I didn’t really get off on the right paw and I can still be sooooooorta grumpy with some of them.
Now, on the other hand, if you’re one of the lucky ones I do like? I’m a precious, affectionate angel of a cat. I love getting ear scratches and giving cheek rubs, I make air biscuits, and I’ll fully flip upside-down to greet you. If you sit down on the floor, I may even climb into your lap and make myself at home.
What’s the secret to being my friend? Simple respect. Don’t run up to me and get right in my face like that kid in Finding Nemo. Just hold out your hand to me and let me come to you. I’ll do it, but I want it to be my choice. I suppose that’s why I’m happy to sit in a lap, but really don’t want to be picked up. It’s all about consent. This is a two-way relationship and my opinion matters, too, you know?
The other thing is… living in a shelter is stressful and I’m just not well-suited to it. Every single person who currently knows me, including you, has only ever seen me in a setting where I’m overstimulated and generally unhappy, which is both not my fault and not my best look. I would LOVE the chance to get out of here and into a quiet, mellow home where I could just be free to be me. I think I would prefer (but probably not require) a single-cat home. I’m not sure what I think of dogs.
While a permanent home would be my first choice, I also think I would really benefit from some time in a foster home. It would both give me a chance to relax and feel better and give the people a chance to gather more information about what I’m really like outside the shelter, which could help me reach my ultimate goal: finding a family!
So if you want to test your mettle and see if you’re worthy, come up and see me! I’m a real treasure for the right person.
My name is Dharma, I’m about five years old, and I’m spayed, up to date on shots, and fully vetted.
