10 cats abandoned at our dumpster

THIS is what we came in to find dumped beside our dumpster this AM. 5 snow covered boxes, each with 4 cats in them taped shut for a total of 20 cats. They were cold, scared, and wondering what happened. We can’t imagine the thought process that was behind this deliberate act. But, we know it was a desperate and horrifying situation for these sweet cats. THIS IS A MASSIVE PROBLEM. This is what happens when no-kill shelters like Open Door are full and the only option is calling animal control authorities where euthanasia is likely because of the extreme overpopulation of pets in our community. As of yesterday, we had 289 cats in our care which is beyond full for us. These 20 put us way over the 300 mark and we are struggling to find spaces for them at our shelter. This is not an ideal situation by any stretch of the imagination. There are just so many more cats (and dogs) in need than there are loving homes. EVERYONE needs to do their part to solve THE PROBLEM:
1) SPAY/NEUTER any animals that are yours or in your care! If you are caring for animals who are not spayed/neutered – this is THE PROBLEM! We have a low cost spay/neuter program with pricing from just $30-$60 – GET ON THE LIST!
2) Consider ADOPTING an existing animal rather than buying one from a breeder/re-homer. Putting money in anyone’s pocket for selling an animal is THE PROBLEM.
3) DONATE to organizations like Open Door who are trying desperately to solve THE PROBLEM by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming cats and dogs in need and spaying/neutering as many rescues, owned pets, and feral cats as we possibly can with our limited budget. With more donations – we can do more to solve THE PROBLEM.
4) EDUCATE others about THE PROBLEM and encourage them to do their part. If you are reading this, you are likely aware of THE PROBLEM and doing your part. PLEASE tell others how critical their actions are to solving pet overpopulation.
